New recommendation consolidates three schools this fall, moves all to PECI by 2018

Revisions have been made to the recommendation plan for Prince Edward County schools. The final report from the accommodation review will be presented at the May 8 School Capacity and Student Enrolment meeting.
The new recommendations:
Effective September, 2017, consolidate students from Pinecrest and Sophiasburgh schools at the Queen Elizabeth School site to form a kindergarten to Grade 6 school. Grade 7 and 8 students from those schools will attend PECI, creating a Grade 7 to 12 school.
Effective September 2018, PECI becomes a Kindergarten to Grade 12 school. “Renewal needs” at that school are estimated at $17.4 million. The need at each of the public schools assessed in 2011-2015 ranges from $1.8 million to $4.7 million.
CML Snider and Kente School consolidation is on hold until a report is done that includes Massassauga Rednersville school.
The original proposal in November 2016, was to close Pinecrest and Queen Elizabeth schools and move students to PECI this fall. Sophiasburgh students would be moved in Sept. 2018. CML Snider and Kente schools and seek funding to build a new K-8 school in Wellington for September 2020.
The changes are how the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board is dealing with aging schools, declining enrolment and funding. School boards are funded mainly on a per-student basis through grants from the Ministry of Education. The report states that between the 2001/02 and 2011/12 school years, elementary enrolment in the County declined by more than 35 per cent; secondary by 31 per cent. Continued decline is forecast.
A Student Enrolment School Capacity Committee meeting for public delegations is to be held May 25 and a final recommendation is to be prepared June 12.
The final decision will be made by the board of trustees at the public board meeting June 19, 2017.

I must say our trustees Inch and Cobb have done little to protect the educational services offered here in the County. This plan will only force many parents to send their kids currently enrolled in the public board to the catholic system. And apparently no changes to the schools in Wellington and at Kente….. for now. This entire ARC process was poorly planned and executed by the HPEDSB.
