Frank-ReillyFRANK REILLY – February 9, 1949 – September 15, 2014 – Very sadly on September 15th at his home outside of Lake on the Mountain, Frank Reilly passed away surrounded by his wife, Nancy, son Joel (Caitlin) (Toronto, ON ), brother Kevin and sister in law Jan (Stock, England), sister Madeleine and brother in law Achilleas (Isle of Wight, England). Other family and friends had just been to see him and tender moments and of course, the Irish joke or “the crack” had been exchanged. Frank came to Prince Edward County to fulfill a dream: the challenge of building his own house relatively by himself. He was a new settler with a dream. We met a lot of good people who had a hand to share at different times. They are warmly thanked! He made his mark on family, friends and acquaintances by being frank by name and nature. He believed in honest, real relationships. At 40, he had an epiphany that life should not be wasted. He became much more in tune with his relationships with others and relished in depth political and philosophical and spiritual discussions. He was most respectful of subjects important to others. To his wife he remains in her heart a most extraordinary person. He also leaves to remember him, his eldest son Ian(Ali) (Jarvis, ON), his brother John and wife Joy (Frankston, Australia), mother in law Hilda Barkman (Toronto, ON), brothers in law, Doug and wife Holly, (Stratford, ON), Bob and wife Lori,(St. Catherine’s, ON) nephews Nick(Alua)(Kazakhstan), Alex,(Brighton, England) Richard(Laura)(England) Jasha (Keri)(New Hamburg ON), nieces Hanna (London, England) Alexis (Conan), (Kearney, ON) Rosalyn and Craig, (Newmarket, ON) Avril (Rob), (London, ON) and great nieces, Jessica, Rileigh, Lucy and great nephew Max. Also left to most dearly remember him are wonderful friends Tony and Shiela (Wardsville, Ontario) Ed and Elaine(Toronto ON) and the best neighbours – those from Lake on the Mountain and area. If Frank could leave this earth having imparted one thing he would want people to passionately value the work of social support in helping those who have limited resources find their advocates in the community. He believed in a hand up- not a hand out. To this end, he supported his wife, Nancy’s work at Kingston Home Base Non Profit Housing. In lieu of flowers, donations in Frank’s memory can be made to this worthy charitable organization. The agency is located at 540 Montreal Street, Kingston, Ontario, K7K 3J2 marked “in memory of Frank Reilly”. Arnold-Hennessy-(2)ARNOLD HENNESSY – Passed away peacefully on August 20, 2014 at the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital in his 88th year, predeceased by his wife, Grace Mae Lindensmith (2003). Arnold was the last surviving child of the fourteen children of Jasper and Martha (White) Hennessy of Picton Ontario. He was the beloved father of Ruth Bailey Dorland (John Dorland) of Kingston and Gordon Hennessy (Nancy Piller) of Panama. He greatly loved and was tremendously proud of his four grandchildren, April Hennessy (Chris Gillies) Kingston, Kate Dorland (Philip Troop) Ottawa, Alexandra Dorland, Ottawa and Taylor Hennessy, Houston Texas. Arnold was delighted at the birth of two great-grandchildren in 2013; Gavin Dorland (Kate & Phil) and Ava Gilles (April & Chris). He will be remembered and sadly missed by his numerous nieces and nephews as well as his friends, especially his loyal and caring friend and companion Lucy Joyce. Born in the family home on Schoharie Road he worked on the family farm and later for his older brother Findlay on his farm. At the age of 16 he moved to Toronto with his brother Peter and sisters Blanch and Effie. He joined the Canadian Army and for a brief time was stationed at Petawawa. He returned to Toronto where he worked in a number of factories including Acme Farmers Dairy. With a strong will and love of learning Arnold strove to improve himself by taking night courses and eventually completed studies to earn a Second Class Stationary Engineer’s Certificate. With his wife and two children he moved to Napanee in 1957 to take up the position of head engineer at the then Acme Farmers Dairy plant, later Pet Milk and eventually became the Plant Manager. He continued there until 1966 when the family moved back to Toronto where Arnold work for Jenny Lynn Chocolate and later Laura Secord Chocolates. In 1969 Arnold, with his wife and son, moved to Wellington Ontario where he established a home building business with his brother Findlay. With his son, Gordon, he later founded Neighbourhood Homes and built houses and apartments in Prince Edward County. During his time as a builder he became very interested, some would say obsessed, with developing a more energy efficient, and trouble free toilet. With much perseverance he developed several patented toilet models, the most revolutionary being the flapperless tip-bucket model. Working with his nephew Philip Hennessy he continued to improve the toilet and in 2008, along with Philip was recognized with the Ernest C. Manning Innovation Award. The toilet and subsequent improved models are sold in Canada, the USA, Mexico, China, Thailand and Spain. One of Arnold’s most enjoyed pastime was fishing and hunting especially at the hunting camp near Lake Mazinaw. He enjoyed the quiet of the woods, the beauty of nature and the camaraderie of family and good friends. Arnold has been a resident of the Manor on Loyalist Parkway Residence in Picton for the past three years where he continued to enjoy visits from relatives, friends and make new acquaintances. Arnold strove to make a positive difference in world. With the many home building projects and the innovative toilets he has left his mark on the landscape. Joyce-LaforceJOYCE LaFORCE – December 23, 1928 – April 3, 2014 – Joyce Marie LaForce nee Blundell, went from this life on April 3, 2014 into the sound of birds finally singing and the sight of spring flowers breaking through the warming earth. She was 85 years old. Sadness is overwhelming at times but we will accept the finality that is the death of the human body. On some plain somewhere, she will be reunited with her love Charlie, daughter Julia and grandchild, Baby Summer. They were never far from her thoughts and they lived quietly in her heart always. Her grandchildren Alex and Emily and great grandson James, were so very important to her. She cherished all tales about the simple goings on in their lives, from growth, to school projects, to friends, to careers, and then their grown up lives. She loved young people and loved having them around. They will miss her terribly. She doted on her son-in-law René and treasured his second wife Christine, daughters Brielle and Casey and son Austin. It was her new found family and she loved seeing them. Daughter Selena and son-in-law Peter nourished her, cared for her and tried to protect her from all that was amiss. It was a long, tiring journey fraught with tears and love, made easier with the caring of many who came to know her through her illness. She lived a long life with joys, and some would say, too many sorrows. She was fiercely protective of those she loved and was always the best cheerleader in the world. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at the Whattam Funeral Home, 33 Main Street, Picton, Ontario on Saturday, April 12th at 2:00 p.m. Joyce and everyone she knew in her last years, fought valiantly against the formidable enemy that is Alzheimer’s. It strips people of not just their memories, but also their hope, their dignity and finally, their lives. It is cruel and unrelenting. If you find it in your plans please make any donations to your local Alzheimer’s chapter. Thank you.

garlic_manTADEUSZ MACZKA – January 14, 1930 – December 30, 2013. It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of the Fish Lake Garlic Man on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital in his 84th year. Husband of the late Wilma Maczka (nee Kuhl). Beloved Tata of Tadeusz “Taj” and Barbara “Basia” Campbell (Terry). Cherished Opa of Alexandra and grandfather of Graham, Caitlin, Megan, and Ryo. Born in Tarnow, Poland, Ted suffered a crippling injury in a WW II labour camp. He immigrated to Canada in the early 1950s where he worked as a tool and die machinist. An entrepreneur at heart, he then developed a wholesale and retail business importing and selling European foods to small businesses across the GTA and Southwestern Ontario. After reading an article in the Financial Post discussing the millions of dollars that Canada spends on importing garlic, Ted decided that he wanted to make Canada self-sufficient in growing garlic. He purchased a hobby farm in Demorestville (Prince Edward County) where he began his research and garlic farming. He won multiple awards for his garlic and travelled far and wide to share his knowledge, expertise, and “garlic gospel.” It was his drive and determination that pioneered the ever-expanding garlic-growing movement in North America. He will be sorely missed. Many thanks to the staff, nurses, and doctors of the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital for their care and support and to the countless others who cared for Ted over the years. Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to attend a memorial visitation to celebrate Ted’s life at the Whattam Funeral Home, 33 Main Street, Picton, on Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 1:00-3:00pm. If desired, donations in his name can be made to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
