Prince Edward County’s giant vegetable growers showed the world how it’s done – winning and placing in several categories at this year’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.
John Vincent set a new Canadian record with his giant cabbage weighing in at 112.2 pounds. He beat his own record set at Thanksgiving with a 99-pound entry. Last year his personal best at the fair weighed “just” 68 pounds.
Vincent, who has been growing giants since 2004, is one of three people in Ontario who have earned the prestigious “Master Growers” distinction.
He also won first place at the Royal competition with his 39.2 pound kohirabi. His wife Sue Vincent earned second spot with her 30.6 pound entry. The couple ended in first and second spots with their giant rutabaga entries – John’s weighing 33.4 pounds and Sue’s 25.4 pounds.
Shannon Langridge, of Picton, earned the Royal’s Overall Youth Exhibitor Award. She also won a fourth place spot for her 24.4 pound kohirabi.
Prince Edward County won three of five top awards in the Royal Giant Pumpkin or Squash Challenge.
John Vincent’s entry took second spot at 1,112.4 pounds. Glen Huffman, of Ameliasburgh took third with a 996.2 pound entry. Shannon Langridge was fourth with her 853.2 pound entry.
