Mayor requested to ask new premier to reconsider turbines

Kathleen Wynne
Ontario’s new premier

At Tuesday night’s council meeting, Mayor Peter Mertens, will be requested, on behalf of council,  to write Ontario’s new premier Kathleen Wynne to reconsider the approval of the industrial wind turbine project at Ostrander Point in Prince Edward County.
The request is to be based on the fact that Wynne has indicated that the province needs to re-evaluate the siting criteria of industrial wind turbines and the project is in a designated, globally significant Important Bird Area and nationally significant under the threatened species category.

Wynne was sworn in Monday as Ontario’s 25th premier. She will also serve as Minister of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs for a year.
“Rural Ontario is more than just agriculture, and we’re going to renew our government’s focus by incorporating a rural perspective on everything from energy policy and economic development to health care and education.”

We had alternatives the last time around and one mayoral candidate, Paul Boyd, vowed to stop the spending if elected. I believe he would have devoted himself to doing just that. A pity that the voters did not back him. Will it be any different another time out or will people keep right on voting for the same style of government then complaining when they get what they asked for?

It is pathetic when the Mayor has to be told to do something that he promised in his campaign. But once again I just heard on the radio this morning that council is ONLY offering moral support on this issue. Well look at it this way, election time is soon coming and change is sure to be on its way. Or we do what other countries are doing and face off with Shire Hall for change, either way its time for a d&c (dusting & cleaning)… of the GREAT HORSESHOE!!!!!

For those who have followed this debate over wind generators, we know that our new Mayor promised during the last municipal campaign to lobby Queen’s Park (when elected)and to fight against wind turbines from being erected in PEC. To date, Mayor Mertens has failed to deliver on his promise to lobby the province.

Now he is being asked by council to write to the new Premier to reconsider turbine approval for PEC. While it is a step in the right direction, why do I get the feeling that it is a forced gesture coming about two years too late?

Sorry, but this is nothing more than our council trying to cover their political tails, after dropping the ball on leading the Ostrander Point appeal.

Writing a letter at this point is just too little and too late. How feeble!

    Let’s hope that Wynne listens
