New general manager for PEFAC

Meloni Horton Crandall

Meloni Horton Crandall  has become the new general manager  for the Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre, (PEFAC), a community non-profit centre for health and wellness located on the outskirts of Picton.
She has been with the organization full time since 2005, most recently as the assistant general manager and the aquatics and children’s director. The PEFAC board promoted Crandall to assume the more senior role, based on her skills and knowledge as well as mentorship from departing GM, Stephanie Roth. She has also served in most of the staff and student positions within the organization.

Stephanie Roth, the first general manager for PEFAC, was an important team member and leader in creating the non-profit organization in May 2005. Stephanie accepted a position as a SAFESTART account manager with Electrolab LTD., Belleville. Electrolab is a national safety training organization. The board, on behalf of PEFAC members, thanked Roth and wished her the best with her continuing career.

“Both of these individuals have helped take this organization from the prior privately-owned “Recplex” to a vibrant public community service,” says Bill Halman, president. “Aside from all the other health services offered, without the diligent work of these two individuals, Prince Edward County could easily have lost local access to a pool – the Lester Family had the foresight to build it and we should be grateful. The current close to 2,500 uses it has per month are a strong indication that people want it operating.” said Halman.

“But that takes management skill, operating skill and programming skill – and it’s not a new pool. We have indeed been fortunate with our staffing. As well, both Meloni and Stephanie have County root and both have been well known in the broader community athletic and service fields. Meloni is an avid ball player and golfer and recently received an award from the local Community Living agency for Inspiring Possibility in Adults. As a local employer of 40 staff, it’s nice to have that kind of community commitment among them. This year they have their first Relay for Life Team. As a board we already see Meloni as a strong team leader and we are pleased she has accepted the role of general manager.”

“I love working at PEFAC. I love watching people take charge of their wellness,” says Crandall. “And it is so satisfying to be doing a job that can have so much impact on people’s lives. I’ve been here long enough to see real changes in folks. I’m excited about the future of PEFAC and look forward to working with staff and their input to make it even better. So I encourage people to stop in and see what we have to offer! Yes, sales is part of my job now too.”

She is a graduate of the Recreation and Leisure Services Progam at Loyalist College in Belleville.  She can be reached at meloni@pefac.ca or 613-476-7776 Visit PEFAC for details on programs and coming events.
