Soap Box Derby highlights Consecon Community Day fun

Consecon Community Day festivities put the focus on fun for all ages. The event kicked off with a Car Boot sale featuring sellers from all over Eastern Ontario.
This family came for the day from Ottawa to compete in the event. This is their second year attending the Derby and came prepared with their homemade carts.
Visitors enjoyed free wagon rides around the village along with a kids’ zone, charity car wash, fire truck and OPP car; art, yoga, and chi kung demonstrations. The Consecon Library held its annual used book sale and kids’ craft area.
The evening wrapped up with wine tastings, a pig roast and a street dance in front of the Legion and Masonic Hall.
THE SOAPBOX DERBY 2013
The Second Annual Soap Box Derby rolled down Mill Street hill at 1pm.
The event was open to both girls and boys age 5 years through 12 years. Following the children’s event there was a senior’s run for anyone 13 years or older who wanted an opportunity to see how they stacked up against the kids.
There were 44 entrants in the Consecon Soap Box Derby, 2013.

The majority of the new street banners, hand-painted by members of the Consecon & area community during the CARA commissioned “Street Banner Festival” were unveiled and hung on Friday August 2nd. in and around the village in time for “Consecon Community Day” Saturday the 3rd. The “Consecon Beautification Project ” overseen by Janet Battaglio with the assistance of Sherri Bergman and Ena Walton, was an opportunity to bring members of the community together, to design, hand-paint and express from their hearts what ‘Life in Consecon’ meant to them.
Consecon Day, kicked-off with 142 hungry folk fed at the “All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast” of which half of the proceeds going to the Consecon Masonic Lodge #50.
The Car Boot Sale was in full swing with over 15 vendors who drew local area residents as well as helped draw visitors to the County off Loyalist Parkway to do a little bargain hunting then send them off into the village & area to continue their shopping at the numerous Garage & Yard sales underway simultaneously.
At 10;00 am the Library opened its doors to hold the annual used book sale and additionally offered a craft area for the kids where they had the opportunity to make flags to cheer on the participants in the Soap Box Derby.
There was a Charity Car Wash with the proceeds going to the Storehouse Foodbank in Wellington and free horsedrawn wagon rides around the village and a pie eating contest won by Consecon resident Curtis Walt.
At noon the free registration for the 3rd Annual Consecon Soap Derby opened and attracted 44 participants, our best ever turnout for this event. At 1:00 pm the first racer took on the Mill Street hill till the last run at about 3:15 pm. concluded the races.
Once the awards ceremonies were over, and clean-up from the derby was complete some 125 folk headed to the Consecon Legion to enjoy the Pig Roast dinner with all the fixins, the casual sit-down dinner was the smooth lead in to the jam packed, day closing Street Dance, which featured the high energy Classic Rock sounds of “Not Yet.”
What a great way to cap off the day, a day of community celebration, a day which saw Councillor Bev Campbell of Picton, and Councillor Robert Quaiff of North Marysburgh (a somewhat regular visitor to Consecon) drop in on our community. The Street Dance attracted area residents, as well as many from other parts of the County, visitors from Brighton, Trenton & Belleville, families, couples and singles, many came out to dance, some came to listen and some just came to hang out with friends and enjoy the fun. Around 11:30 we reopened Mill Street as everyone made their way home after the long, hectic and exciting day.
