Movie in the Mess a Taste tribute to Camp Picton

Stories We Tell (Trailer) by Sarah Polley, National Film Board of Canada

Local veteran Private Russ Burrows is to be the guest of honour at the Movie in the Mess Friday night presentation of this year’s TASTE community grown event.

“This event is a once in a lifetime opportunity to step back in time and experience Camp Picton as it was in the 1940s,” says Lindsay Casey, of Taste the County.

Just 150 guests will explore the Second World War sergeant’s mess hall, enjoy a dinner, kick up their heels to a live era band and finish off the evening relaxing under the stars with a movie presented by the Kingston Canadian Film Festival.

“Historic Camp Picton is the perfect backdrop for the unique evening. Built on the heights overlooking Picton and opened in 1941, this significant property once housed the Royal Air Force’s No. 31 Bombing & Gunnery School, the No. 5 Reserve Equipment Maintenance Unit and the Royal Canadian School of Artillery, as well as the 1st Surface to Surface Missile Battery and the 2nd SSM Battery of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery.

The emcee for the evening is to be Tony Ruthven, of the Picton Legion.

Movie in the Mess begins with cocktails and socializing, followed by dinner prepared with local ingredients by Wheelhouse Catering of Picton. The evening’s live entertainment will be the honkey tonk, ‘40s blues and original music of Toronto’s Kristine Schmitt and her Special Powers.

Attendees will then take in an outdoor screening of Canadian director Sarah Polley’s acclaimed film, Stories We Tell. The National Film Board production will be presented by the Kingston Canadian Film Festival, an annual celebration of the best in Canadian film.

The Movie in the Mess takes place on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at historic Camp Picton (343 County Rd. 22). Tickets are $25 per person and are available at www.tastecommunitygrown.com. Dinner will have a vegetarian option.
