Author Tanya Huff, of Prince Edward County, won an Aurora Award for Best Novel at Ottawa’s Can-Con convention Sunday.
The Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association presents Aurora awards “to honour the best Canadian science fiction and fantasy literary works, artwork, and fan activities from the previous year.”
Huff was honoured with the $1,000 prize and trophy for ‘Silvered’ (DAW Books).
The Aurora is a fan nominated and voted award by members of the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association.
Huff told her blog fans she was thrilled, especially since she was sure Destiny’s Fall by Marie Bilodeau was the front runner.
“Actually, I’m still thrilled,” she wrote. “Every now and then, at totally random moments, I grin and murmur, “I won an Aurora.”
She also noted that the last time she had a microphone at an Aurora awards presentation, it was to announce that the two year eligibility for novels was no longer necessary because Canadian science fiction and fantasy now had enough excellent work available on a yearly basis.
The Silvered is a heroic fantasy with werewolves and a Napoleonic tech level.
Her 27 books range from heroic fantasy (the Quarters books) through humour (the Keeper Chronicles) to military science fiction (the Torin Kerr Confederation series) and include Scholar of Decay, a novel set in TSR’s Ravenloft universe as well as four short story collections and two e-collections and recent e-reprints of Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light and The Fire’s Stone.
The winners for the 2013 Auroras were:
Novel: The Silvered – Tanya Huff
YA Fiction: Under my Skin, The Wildlings – Charles de Lint
Short Fiction: The Walker of the Shifting Borderland – Douglas Smith
