Racing hopefuls kept the faith through 20 minutes of torrential rain and when the sun finally broke through and the first soap box rolled off the starting ramp, 45 participants had signed up to tackle Consecon’s Mill Street Hill in the fifth annual Consecon Soap Box Derby.

“For the third year in a row the Waters girls, Erika and Sarasa made the trek in from Ottawa, and Eric, Thomas and Isabel Joiner from Calgary, took part in the races as they are visiting the Consecon area on vacation,” said Bill McMahon, one of the event organizers. “Nick and Emily MacDonald made the trip in from Kingston, and we had racers from Mississauga, Pickering, and Toronto in addition to our own County and Quinte area participants. Luckily we had St. John Ambulance on site, as there were a few incidents that required their attention this year.”

Bill McMahon, a race organizer, was delighted racers "kept the faith" during torrential rain for 20 minutes before the start time.

Consecon Community Day had kicked off with a Car Boot Sale”  and area-wide garage and yard sales. The Consecon Masonic Lodge hosted an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, prior to the charity car wash for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. A PEC fire truck and OPP car were on display for community members to investigate.

Once the soap box medal and trophy presentations had been made and Mill Street was re-opened to traffic, folks headed to the Consecon Legion for a pig roast dinner, which also served as the lead-in to the day-capping street dance when once again Mill Street was closed to traffic –  this time in front of the Legion and the Masonic Hall. The County’s own Little Bluff entertained and served up soulful, bluesy rock and Rroll dance tunes, keeping the crowd dancing till just shy of midnight.
