Funding boost for Bay of Quinte clean up

Almost $38,000 in funding for new technology will continue efforts to clean up and restore the Bay of Quinte which decades ago was listed as a top 10 toxic hot spot in the Great Lakes.

“As we get closer to the delisting of the Bay of Quinte we are concerned about its future,” said Terry Murphy Bay of Quinte Remedial Action Plan co-chair. “We cannot stop caring for the bay and monitoring its condition. This grant will help us carry out in-house monitoring so we can design programs for the bay’s long term protection.”

Murphy, the general manager of Quinte Conservation, said the “Great Lakes Areas of Concern” are areas where the environment and water quality are severely degraded. “Restoring them is a priority because they impact the health of the ecosystem locally and collectively across the basin.”

The long-term monitoring project received the federal funding following an announcement by Daryl Kramp, MP Prince Edward Hastings, who noted the government support of projects supported by the Great Lakes Sustainability Fund that focus on restoring fish and wildlife habitat and populations, cleaning up contaminated sediment, and controlling pollution from municipal wastewater, urban storm water and rural run-off.
