Fairy Doors to magically appear throughout the County

Fairy-door-1Fairy doors will begin to appear throughout Prince Edward County thanks to support from the Awesome PEC Foundation.

At its second pitch party, Louise McFaul’s project received the support of the trustees who handed over the $1,000 bag of cash grant.

fairy door2“Fairy Doors will install little fairy-sized doors in publicly accessible spaces to ignite the imagination and create a special attraction for kids and families,” said Lenny Epstein, PEC Awesome Foundation founder. ”

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is a growing, worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of “awesomeness”. The idea started in 2009 in Boston, and now dozens of local chapters of the foundation distribute $1,000 grants to creators of projects. The money is pooled together from the coffers of 10 or so self-organizing “micro-trustees” and awarded with no strings attached.

McFaul and four other projects were short-listed and made a ‘pitch’ for their idea. In August, the first grant was awarded to Craig Morrison, to host a two-day skateboard making workshop for County teenagers.

“Being able to share a whimsical idea with a group of forward thinking individuals was a truly rewarding experience,” said McFaul. “The next step in the Fairy Door project is to seek out willing hosts for the doors. Ideally, I’d like publically accessible spaces (businesses or public property) where a door can be permanently, or semi-permanently, affixed to a solid surface, like a wall or a tree.

“Private individuals are also welcome to be a part of the project. If they have an accessible space that they are willing to share, or if they’d like a door for their own enjoyment, we would love to share our project with them.”

Individuals from the community are also invited to create a door. Some local artists have offered to create doors for the project.  Email LouiseMcFaul@Hotmail.com if you would like to take part.

The other short-listed projects were:

Game Dev CoOp A beginner to intermediate game development workshop series for all ages.

Souper Bowls A collaboration between the arts and culinary communities, this existing worldwide movement helps to fight hunger with a County twist.

Boogie Woogie Family Dance Party A fun filled family dance for all ages with a goal of community building.

Wellington Community Harvest These public planter boxes will raise awareness of food insecurity and grow organic produce for the local food bank.
