Community helps hospital auxiliary create beautiful Festival of Trees

The sparkle, colour and cheer of Christmas has unfolded at the Isaiah Tubbs Resort at West Lake as the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary unveils its annual County Festival of Trees.

“The proceeds will enable us to fulfill our mission to support and assist the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital, its patients, staff and local community in meeting their health care needs,” said Peggy Payne, president of the auxiliary.

And the County community is stepping up to help with donations of more than 175 beautifully decorated Christmas trees and holiday decorations. Among them is a tree that lovingly remembers a family’s wife and mother.

In memory of their mom Patricia Balcanquel, who passed away three years ago, daughters Kelli Whiting and Debbie Burrowes, passed along some special memories for this year’s festival.

The daughters explained their mom had always wanted to have a white Christmas tree with turquoise and silver ornaments. She finally bought everything she needed and also made a matching wreath. Their mom died a year later but the family chose to remember her by sharing the tree and display which also features the things she loved – including cupcakes, hot chocolate and penguins.

The three day event is a silent auction of the trees, which were decorated and donated by County businesses, organizations, groups and citizens. Volunteer entertainers are providing the sounds of the season all weekend.

Trees have filled the resort’s main dining room as well as the upper and lower floors of the MacDonald Hall. The Christmas Boutique of choice items donated to the auxiliary – clothing, linens, books, home decor, jewelry – are set up in Lodge 1 and this year, an art and antique sale will be featured in the Williams Pavillion.

After Friday’s Bloomfield Santa Claus Parade, the Queen’s University Pipe Band will perform from 8:15 to 9 p.m.

Bring the children on Saturday from 11-11:30 to meet Santa Claus and participate in a special program with entertainer Jeanette Arsenault. They return on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
