County budget talks begin

Prince Edward County’s new council will begin its first round of budget talks tomorrow in Shire Hall. The proposed operating budget is $31 million.

Before the budget orientation presentation by the Director of Finance, councillors will hear from several community groups and organizations requesting financial assistance via grants for the coming year. Among those is the Wellington and Glenwood Cemetery boards; Festival Players; Arts Council;  Community Foundation; PEC Field Naturalists; PE Fitness and Aquatic Centre; PE County Radio 99.3; Regent Theatre Foundation and Volunteer Information Quinte.

Reading about the aging infrastructure for Picton’s water and wastewater and budget impacts. They had better figure it out and not come back with more user fees. The user fee’s have increased beyond belief the last 5 years.I think Picton is one of the highest rates for water service in the Country. You cannot promote urban growth and development with fees that have sky rocketed well beyond affordability.

Wolf; you shouldn’t stand too close to your smart meter! It knows when you are home, it knows when you cook and do you laundry as well.

  3. Marnie says:

Sure it’s important to maintain our cemeteries but it is also important to maintain accountability. It’s not unreasonable to ask how they spend the money. Why do only two county cemeteries get grants? What about the others? Don’t they deserve help too?

  4. Wolf Braun says:

Hiring outside consultants should be verboten. Alternatively, if they have to bring in a consultant they should hire them and eliminate a full time job.

  5. Emily says:

You don’t think it is important to maintain our cemeteries? The costs to maintain Glenwood in a respectable manner is significant. We can spend 30k on a fruit of the Loom logo, another 30k for a consultant to review Council size etc. Seems like a reasonable expense.

  6. cementman says:

I would rather spend money on cemeteries than $20,000 on turtles

  7. Marnie says:

What’s with these ongoing grants to two county cemeteries? Does anybody keep track of how they spend the money?

  8. Gary says:

Isn’t Protection services also Fire services?

  9. Wolf Braun says:

Close enough Marie. 🙂 I think we could hire a private protection service for one third of that. Plus there’s more of them to choose from. 🙂

  10. Marie says:

that does say $18,000 per day for police right?

  11. Wolf Braun says:

Looks to me like there’s lots of wiggle room (cuts) to ensure a surplus and therefore no tax increase.
