Incredible destination, but does it have a hospital?

Very recently Time Inc’s Travel and Leisure publication chose Prince Edward County as one of 52 (no.10) best places to travel for 2015. This same article was posted in the L.A. Times. Writer Nikki Ekstein compared the County to the Napa Valley in 1970 and said it has become a haven for creative types. She went on to write about the 40-plus wineries, the Sandbanks and the boutiques and ice cream at Bloomfield.
Prince Edward County was the only Canadian destination mentioned. Twelve were located in the U.S.A, while the other standout locations were located around the world.

The article has had great media coverage which can only bode well for Prince Edward County. For many of us who feel that we are very fortunate to live in this beautiful County and attempt to do everything we can to promote it, this is wonderful news. All those who act as ambassadors of the County deserve some of the credit for this accolade. The volunteers who help to run the many amazing events throughout the year also play a very large part in this. I think that everyone is well aware that this County could not run without the volunteers.

We know that the economy of Prince Edward County will  grow because of this honour and the influx of visitors will  increase. We also know that of the tourists who will visit the County throughout the years many will choose to retire here. The number one question that prospective buyers ask is “do you have a  viable hospital in the County?” This then begs the question “Why are QHC, the LHIN and the Ministry of Health constantly cutting services and beds at PECM hospital?” They should be adding services and beds. Some residents have already left the County because of the many cuts to services at our local hospital.

The municipal leaders of Prince Edward County, as have the residents, been given an amazing gift by this kind of international promotion. How they use this gift, time will tell. Perhaps aggressively opening up the hospital file once again would be a start.

  1. Wolf Braun says:

Yes, as always very well written.

Does anyone in the County have a “viable and active plan” for keeping our hospital alive and serving the needs of County people?

Viable and active does NOT mean ‘promises’ of a new hospital in ten or more years. A plan that would continue to allow young mothers’ babies to make that claim “born in Prince Edward County and cared for life at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital”.

  2. Joyce Wade says:

    Well stated Fran!
