Team Quinte scientists ‘fair’ well at nationals

Students from the Quinte Regional Science Fair brought home medals at the
Canada-wide Science Fair at Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Aiden Haddad (HJC Destinations) , Alex Schneider (Albert College), Meera Moorthy (HJC Destinations)  – received Junior Bronze medals and Holly Tetzlaff received an Intermediate Silver medal for her project.

The students, including PECI’s Sara Evans, were Quinte area fair winners and won the all-expensed trip to compete at the national level.

Evans’ project “Dominant and Recessive Inheritance of Hair Texture” looked at various discrepancies between the theories and the observations regarding hair morphology inheritance patterns. She looked at the genetics of hair types.

Holly Tetzlaff a student from East Northumberland High School’s project “Small But Mighty-The Environmental Impact of Microbeads ” looked at Plastic and non-plastic microbeads in personal care products. She was awarded an Excellence Award – Intermediate – Silver Medal and $2000 entrance Western University Scholarship.

Aiden Haddad from Harry J Clarke Destinations project “Pendulum Transportation System ” ,looked at how to run vehicles on gravity and pendulums. For his project he was awarded  an Excellence Award – Junior – Bronze Medal and $1000 Western University Entrance Scholarship

Also, from Harry J Clarke Destinations, was Meera Moorthy with her project entitled “A Natural Fertilizer” which looked at if clovers (and their nitrogen fixing techniques) can act as a viable, and promising, natural alternative to chemical fertilizers. She was awarded Excellence Award – Junior – Bronze Medal and $1000 Western University Entrance Scholarship.

Albert College student Alex Scheidner’s project “The Strength of Dogs’ Olfactory System Among Different Breeds” looked at the smelling abilities service dogs.  At Alex’s she was visited by a Tilly a special fire service canine. For her project she was awarded Excellence Award – Junior – Bronze Medal and $1000 Western University Entrance Scholarship.

“The Quinte Regional Fair hopes these amazing young scientists will inspire other youth in our region by relating all their experiences from the Canada-wide Science Fair to others to show that there are many opportunities that are available in science. These students are excellent ambassadors for our area.” said Scott Berry, Canada-wide Delegate for the Quinte Regional Science Fair.

Team Quinte took in Huntsman Marine Science Centre, Minister’s Island (the estate of Sir William Van Horne, the second president of and the driving force behind the Canadian Pacific Railway), St. Stephen Chocolate Factory Museum – Ganong and actively took part in the number one unofficial sport of the Canada-wide Science Fair- pin trading.

The Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair is held every year in Belleville at Loyalist College in April. It is one of the oldest in the country starting in 1960, two years before the national fair. The fair is a non-profit organization that provides a stepping stone for students to present their ideas and to encourage other students to explore and investigate the varied fields that science has to offer by using and
developing reasoning and critical thinking skills. The Quinte Regional Science attempts to make science fun and an opportunity for all students to excel in our area.
