Picton’s Main Street rehabilitation set for September start

Picton Main Street’s Rehabilitation Project is expected to begin next month.

In an update to Picton Business Improvement Association members, manager Lyndsay Richmond notes the reconstruction between the intersection at Chapel Street and Bridge Street (top of the town hill) will also include replacement of some trees, lamp standards, sidewalks, crosswalk treatments and curbs.

An Arborist Assessment is being used to develop a long-term tree replacement plan. An assessment on each tree is being completed. A topographic survey has determined some of the trees, especially those on the north side, may be problematic to the replacement of infrastructure.

A full streetscape plan is being developed using information from Picton Main Street – Design Guidelines; Downtown Public Strategic Action Plan; a number of case study examples provided by the Ontario Business Improvement Areas and recommendations from the Picton BIA Streetscape Advisory Committee, the newsletter stated.

BIA chair Trevor Crowe said the BIA has been working with the County and consulting engineer over the past several weeks to finalize the master plan.

“Once the construction contract is awarded, the BIA will continue to work alongside the Rehabilitation Project team to advocate on behalf of the BIA members in Picton,” he said.

The BIA is also promoting extended hours of operation to assist in attracting increased pedestrian traffic to the downtown Thursday through Saturday for late August, early September and in December.

A public meeting to present the streetscape master plan has been discussed for mid-August.

The County is requesting permission for access from property and business owners within the construction zone to allow staff and consultants Greer Galloway to confirm locations of existing water and sewer service lines at each building.
