Council to see Sandbanks’ new campground design

Council will see the final design of the new campground development plan at Sandbanks Provincial Park at Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Andrew Tulk and Mark Routhier, of consulting company WSP, are set to present the final design for the recreational vehicle campground to be located across from the dunes day use area near West Lake. The campground is to accommodate 75 electrical sites and associated infrastructure including comfort station, vault toilets, a new gate/office, internal roads, parking lots, trailer sanitation station and connector pedestrian/ bike trails.

The three campground loop development was identified in the 1993 Sandbanks Provincial Park Management Plan.

It requires a new entrance from County Road 12 directly across from the dunes day use
entrance. Ontario Parks has designed a four-way intersection and an additional exit only onto County Road 12 is also designed for camper traffic to exit. The new western access is expected to reduce traffic to the main gate, but may increase use on County Road 18.

Replacement habitat for Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark habitat will be created in an adjacent field.

Next steps included tendering, notification of affected stakeholders. Site development is set for the summer and fall of 2016 and spring of 2017.
