Pack 4 Fort Mac rally to fill big rig

The devastating wildfires in Fort McMurray have prompted a massive relief effort in the Quinte region.

Member of Provincial Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings Todd Smith said Operation Pack 4 Fort Mac started last week after he received a call from the owner of a local business.

“Max Haggerty of International Truckload Services on Bellevue Road called offering to send a big rig loaded with supplies to help everyone in Fort Mac. He just needed someone to help collect the items and figure out what those folks really need. Since then we’ve been coordinating with Belleville Firefighters, Alberta Emergency Measures, the Canadian Red Cross and organizers of the Furball’s Choice relief effort.”

Staff at Smith’s constituency office are working with Belleville Firefighters to collect the following priority items for families in need.

– *Baby items (food, formula, diapers (sealed packages, especially sizes 3-5), wipes)
– *Blankets, Pillows and Towels (new or clean and in good condition)
– *Toiletries (feminine hygiene products, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hair brushes, hair ties, deodorant, tooth brushes) ALL MUST BE NEW
– Thick grey work socks (for firefighters)
– Clothing and Shoes (new)
– Paper plates, plastic cutlery, non-breakable bowls.
– Zip lock bags and garbage bags
– Cleaning supplies (floor cleaner, laundry detergent, etc.)
– Medication (must be new – lactose pills, antacid, Gravol, ibuprofen, allergy pills, etc.)
– *Non-perishable pet food
– Animal crates

– Pet blankets, beds and leashes

*items are considered a priority for the relief effort.

The effort will start Tuesday at noon and will run each weekday from noon until six until the trailer is full. The trailer will be located at the Electrolab Building, 335 University Avenue in Belleville.
