Katnip Tea raises more than $3,000 in support of Loyalist Humane Society

Sandman, Edward and three kittens needing names helped supporters of the Loyalist Humane Society raise well over $3,200 (counting continues) at Sunday’s Katnip Tea.

Loyalist Humane’s Anne Moffat held the three kittens as auctioneer Adam Miller took bids for naming rights.

The second annual fundraising event was held in the Bloomfield Church Hall with silent auctions and a live auction by auctioneer Adam Miller, of County Traders, and included a wide range of items donated by friends of the society and local businesses.

Tea and sweets were enjoyed as guests listened to selections of music by tenor Julian Gallo, vocalist Lenni Stewart, flautist Colleen Galway and accompanist Tom Dietzel. The tea was dedicated in memory of Zeke, who lived at the shelter for six years. Zeke brought many a smile to shelter volunteers and visitors as the resident avaitor who delighted in leaping onto the shoulders of unsuspecting visitors. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge last week.

Donations were also collected for the new Shelter Beautification Program and for a new Memory Garden, under the guidance of volunteer Sandra Dowds, Master Gardener retired. The garden will be located adjacent to the two outdoor “catios” and will incorporate seating. Anyone who has lost a beloved friend will be welcome to visit the space and perhaps derive comfort from watching Loyalist’s residents play in the sun.

More than 200 cats and kittens in need of forever homes live at the Loyalist Humane Society on County Road 4, (Talbot Street), near the intersection of Tripp Road. Donations are always welcome. A non-profit charity since 1999, the no-kill shelter is solely funded by donations, sponsors and fundraising and is dependent on volunteers. Call 613-476-4951.
