The day began with a memorial service at the Veterans’ Plot featuring a parade with colour parties, a pipe and drum band, and guest soloist Jeanette Arsenault. Senior Military Officer, Lt.-Col. Cathy Blue, of 8 Wing, Trenton saluted veterans with a military tribute. Canadian flags and poppies were distributed to decorate graves of veterans.

The afternoon featured a costumed walking tour led by Lt.-Col. Thomas Bog (Don Roberts) who in 1862 raised the First Company of Volunteers, later to become the nucleus of the 16th Battalion.

Though stories written by Margaret Haylock Capon, a number of soldiers were profiled, including Major James Inrig, who served in both World Wars; Reuben Henderson, American Civil War veteran who became a pensioned veteran at age 14; army nurse Mabel Foster, war correspondent Anne Merrill and Mrs. Dora Prinzen, a Dutch farm wife, who with her family, hid seven Allied airmen shot down during the Second World War.

Margaret Haylock Capon, a freelance writer and former newspaper reporter, is the author of the book Hearts We Leave Behind, an illustrated history of Picton’s Glenwood Cemetery.

During the tour, tenor Julian Gallo (Wally Williamson) and vocalist Lenni Stewart sang war-time songs.

Horse and wagon rides were given along the roadways of historic Glenwood, with a commentator to describe its history.

Photography sessions were held by County Photographer Phil Norton.
Norton runs County Outings – year-round guided tours and photography workshops based in the County and, regularly, also extending beyond the borders for retreats and trips.

Here’s a look at a few of the images captured that day by Phil Norton, and Jan Swenson, of Wellington.
