The Invitational Napanee Girls’ hockey tournament started off on a high note when PECI beat the ENSS Blue Dragons in a shootout.

The game started off with both teams battling hard, producing lots of chances to score. Both goalies stopped the chances the teams got, but ENSS was a little faster, scoring a goal in the first period.

During the second, determined Panthers starting pushing ENSS into their end. Later in the second ENSS got a penalty, resulting in a power play. The Panthers did well with their power play but were not able to score. With 15.6 seconds left in the second, ENSS scored their second goal of the game.

The Panthers were hungry for a goal and started off the third period strong. ENSS was starting to get tired as the Panthers started to push them into their zone. Finally, Brooke Jackson scored the first goal for the Panthers with an assist by Abby Terpstra. A minute after the goal, PECI got a penalty but that didn’t stop the Panthers from pressuring ENSS. A minute into the penalty kill, the Panthers scored a goal that was disallowed by the refs because he blew the whistle before it went in. Seconds after the disallowed goal Jackson scored the tying goal, with an assist by Sarah Juby.

The third period ended and went straight to a shootout. Panthers goalie Maddy Rowbotham shut down all three shooters, while Jackson score the only shootout goal for the Panthers to win.

The next two games were losses for the Panthers, which ended their tournament play. Special recognition in their 4-1 loss to Frontenac goes to Juby, who scored the only goal of that game, with an assist by Jackson. Special recognition in their 7-1 loss to Napanee goes to Jackson, who scored the only goal, with an assist by Maddy Young.

The Panthers’ first game is set for February 11th versus Centre Hastings, in Madoc. Their next home game is set for February 12th versus Nicholson, at 3 p.m. at the Picton arena.
