Following a tough 7-2 loss against St. Teresa’s in the last regular season game, the PECI boys hockey team came back to beat the ENSS Blue Dragons 6- 0 to advance to Bay of Quinte action on Tuesday.
The game started with much back-and-forth but toward the end of the first, PECI gained speed and with four minutes left, captain Andrew Ward scored the only goal of the period.
The second period was a highlight for the Panthers as they gained the speed to push ENSS into their end. Within the first two minutes, Andrew Foster scored the second goal of game. The period went on for a while with no scoring but PECI was dominating over ENSS as the game was played mostly in ENSS’s end. With four minutes left in the second, Chase Eaton scored an unassisted goal. ENSS was getting frustrated and as a result took a penalty. PECI got lots of chances but was unable to produce a goal during the powerplay. With a minute left in the third, Lucas Clarke scored for the Panthers.
The Panthers dominated ENSS in the third. Within the first three minutes, Riley St. Pierre scored a goal. There was no scoring for a long time and PECI took a lot of penalties toward the end of the third. This made ENSS hungry for a goal so near the end of the game, with PECI having two penalties, ENSS pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. ENSS really pushed PECI with their three-man advantage but PECI goalie Carter Whitteker denied them any chance they got to ruin his shutout. Right at the end of the period Cole St. Pierre shot the puck toward the empty net and scored with seconds left in the third.
Recognition goes to Jimmy Kuipers with one assist, Dryden Norton with one assist, Walker DeRoche with one assist, Aidan Wallwork with one assist, Cole St. Pierre with one assist, Ward with one assist and Eaton with one assist.
The boys move on to Bay of Quinte where they will compete against the other top teams Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Quinte Sports & Wellness Centre.
