Canada 150, PEC 225 celebration plans under way

The Canada 150 and PEC 225 Celebration committee will update council this week on plans and events for celebrating the milestones during 2017.

The committee of eight members has a $25,000 budget from council to encourge individuals and groups to collaborate, innovate and share information about Canada’s 150th birthday, and the County’s 225th year.

Promoting “Come Home to the County” celebrations are to include a specially created Prince Edward County barn quilt for 225. Councillors will also be invited to plant one tree in each ward with a Canada 150 PEC 225 commemorative marker. Residents will be encouraged to make their own mark by planting a tree on their property, visiting County museums, hosting reunions and creating a time capsule.

A 225 Reasons to Love the County aspect will encourage the submission of iconic, historic and contemporary photographs with an aim to create a library for future uses. There will be 225 photos posted through social media.

Committee members include councillor Steve Ferguson, Ken Dewar, of the museum advisory committee, Peter Lockyer of the Prince Edward Heritage Advisory Committee and volunteers and residents Dawn Ayer (chair), Ford Rosborough (vice-chair), Susanne Barclay, Shirley Lewchuk, Kasey Rogerson and Pam Piercey.
