Pedal for Hope switches gears to ‘Give Where You Live’

The popular Pedal for Hope fundraiser has switched gears this year to cycle in a new program called ‘Give Where You Live’. The beneficiary of the 2017 tour will be Camp Trillium’s OuR Island, located off the shores of Wellington in Prince Edward County.

After five successful years, the police officers and volunteers behind the Pedal for Hope Quinte team are changing their name and revving up the new program they say better represents locally-based fundraising with elementary schools.

The same police officers will be visiting local elementary schools in the fall of 2017 during a cycling event, offering the same dynamic, fun-filled school assemblies and a positive message of hope they delivered with cancer society fundraising to thousands of students across Hastings and
Prince Edward counties.

Organizer, Const. Jeremy Ashley, with the Belleville Police Force, said Tuesday the families of children who have had, or are battling cancer have expressed positive support for the change.

“The Pedal for Hope Quinte tour was an incredible venture for all police officers involved,” said Ashley. “And the same crew is continuing to volunteer under the new name – ‘Give Where You Live’ – which we feel better represents our goals working with our community.”

Sgt. James Locke of the Ontario Provincial Police said the officers involved are eager to re-engage elementary students in Prince Edward and Hastings counties with a refreshed outlook.

“The program we created and refined over the past several years has helped to establish new relationships with children in our local communities – and that’s something that we will continue and expand upon with Give Where You Live.”

The beneficiary of this year’s tour will be Camp Trillium’s OuR Island, which offers children living with cancer and their families a special experience, but has made it a priority to support local businesses, hire local students and staff from Prince Edward and Hastings counties.

Money raised through the Give Where You Live program will assist in maintaining and upgrading the aging facilities at the campground.

“Camp Trillium is excited to partner with Give Where You Live in its inaugural year as an independent event supporting children living with cancer,” said Fiona Fisher, Camp Trillium’s Director of Development.

Schools, students and sponsors assisting the Give Where You Live event will be directly supporting “children living with cancer and their families attending Camp Trillium, OuR Island in Bloomfield.

“They will be sending children to camp and making some improvements to the islands activity hall.”

All of the same sponsors with Pedal for Hope Quinte – Reid’s Dairy, Canadian Tire Belleville and Bayview Auto Belleville – have remained on board for the new venture.

Tour dates are tentatively scheduled to be held from Oct. 10-20, 2017 and will be finalized in early September.
