LHIN OKs next phase for County hospital

Plans for a new hospital in Prince Edward County moved up another step of many to become reality.

The South East LHIN Board of Directors, on Monday, approved the Stage 1A Master Program proposal from Quinte Health Care (QHC).

The proposal, which builds on the pre-capital submission approved by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in January 2017, outlines service delivery and preliminary plans.

That approval moves the project to the provincial government’s table for approval.

“A new hospital for the residents of Prince Edward County remains QHC’s number one redevelopment priority,” said Mary Clare Egberts, CEO Quinte Health Care. “The current building has served us well for 50 years, but no longer meets today’s standards for hospital-based care. The support and involvement of the South East LHIN in this project is a huge benefit to help move this through the many stages of the approval process.”

A health care campus model also continues to be pursued with the Prince Edward Family Health Team, community clinics and community supports being co-located/adjacent to the new hospital.

The next phase of the capital process (1B) will include an evaluation of the current site, investigation of site options and a high-level space plan and cost estimate. The Stage 1B proposal will be provided directly to the MOHLTC for approval.

Fred I might be wrong but thought I read there was donated land offered directly behind the PECMH. The hospital is old but still is operating and would be valued for the location and facilities. A private company investor would be all over that deal.

  2. Fred says:

I doubt the building would pass requirements for a retirement or convalescent home. Besides, where are you going to build the new hospital if you leave the old?

  3. ADJ says:

Goes without saying the building would have to be renamed.

  4. ADJ says:

Adding my support to Daves idea and I would hope the present PECMH can be kept alive as a seniors retirement or convalesant home. Just try and find a vacancy in this County for a senior needing a nursing home. Either County run or privately owned it is ideally suited and located.

  5. Dave says:

The new hospital should be built at the present location, there is water, hydro, gas,and sewers. The hospital has server this community very well from this location. People of Prince Edward County speak up! this will be your hospital for you are the one paying for it, your input is as important as the one’s making the decisions

  6. Marnie says:

So in 1918-1919 we had a nine-bed hospital and at some point in the future will have a new one with 12 beds. This is progress?

  7. Jim says:

    Fred nailed it.

  8. Fred says:

I believe a greater number of residents prefer the Hospital be built at the current location for greater access, walking ability and visibility. I hope the deal with the new retirement home at McFarland doesn’t impact location decisions.
