PEC OPP escort Special Olympics Flame of Hope through Picton

Multi-medal winning competitive swimmer Luke Flynn carried the ‘Flame of Hope’ this year for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics through Picton on Wednesday.

Flynn, a Picton resident, has his sights set on competition at the Worlds in 2020 and the Special Olympics. Recently at a match in Pickering he earned two gold, one silver and one bronze medal for his swims.

“I like to swim. It’s what I do,” said Flynn, who noted he enjoys training at PEFAC. He also plays basketball and participates in Dragon Boat racing at Wellington.

He was joined by members of the Prince Edward County OPP, the department’s new commander John Hatch and officers undergoing bicycle training.

The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run is the official charity of choice for the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. The run celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and has raised more than $40 million for Special Olympics Ontario.

The Flame of Hope is carried in more than 150 communities across the province, culminating at the final leg where it is run into the Special Olympics Provincial Games. The games are set for July 13-16 this year, in Peel.
