County connections bring world-class magician/mentalist to the Regent Sunday

Through typical who-knows-who connections in Prince Edward County, world-class magician and mentalist Bobby Motta will tap into illusions of the mind Sunday, July 16 at Picton’s Regent Theatre.

As Canada’s master of the unknown, Motta has earned celebrity props – astounding stars such as Russell Crowe, Nelly Furtado and Al Pacino – and is hailed by the New York Times as “one of the top mentalists on the planet”.

Motta’s parents retired to the County several years ago and through local friends, have introduced Motta to various County hotspots. Following was the capture of a one-night show in Picton.

While his show’s poster could be called intimidating, Motta guarantees an interactive, sometimes comical, 90 minutes or more of stunning, impossible moments.

“I’ve been told many times that I have scary posters,” said Motta in an interview from his Toronto home. “But the second I walk on stage and engage with the audience people will see that I’m actually a nice guy,” he laughs. “I make people quite comfortable – I don’t scare them or make them feel bad. Very early in the show the audience feels connected with me and they’re like ‘OK, this guy’s a normal human being, but weird things are happening and I’m with him for the ride!”

Mentalism, he said, is magic for the mind.

“It’s a shocking effect that is often followed by laughter,” he said, noting he likes to keep his shows fresh – creating new material continuously using his signature tricks that have been coveted by the world’s top magicians.

“There’s a small community of us that are creators, and an even smaller community of creators who actually perform as well,” said Motta, who is one of the industry’s most sought-out consultants behind the scenes, loaning out his secrets and effects to the consulting teams for world-class magicians such as David Blaine and Criss Angel. He also consults on some of stage and television’s biggest productions.

“What we do is sit in a circle and come up with an idea – for example – this coffee cup is going to float in the air and it’s going to vanish into a butterfly. As a consultant, we come up with a solution to perform that live, as an original effect. The consulting team resorts to the principles, then gets creative.”

Penn and Teller were one of his first customers for a trick he created more than a decade ago. They put him on the map with other big names who now use Motta’s creations of products and tricks for the magic world.

“Success is in the passion,” said Motta, whose interest in magic started as a youth but only tapped into it later in life.

“Most pros in the industry start in their early teens and continue it but it was a soft hobby for me as a youngster. I really started hitting it hard when I was around 30 so it’s only been 15-20 years for me. I was fortunate that I was in the right places at the right times and created effects a lot of people wanted.”

Sunday’s ‘Grey Matter’ show will feature his signature tricks, combining material from his new show titled ‘Cryptic’ that he performs weekly in Toronto. His jaw-dropping performances are said to leave even the biggest skeptics as wide-eyed as little kids at a carnival.

“All I can say is that it will be an experience you definitely will soon not forget,” said Motta. “Come with an open mind and don’t be afraid to get involved!”

Tickets are $35 for the show Sunday, July 16 at 8 p.m. Click here to get tickets online, visit the Regent Theatre Box Office, 224 Main St., Picton or call the theatre at 613-476-8416 to book your seat.
