About the Author:
Never in my memory of municipal elections has there been such a large turnout. This is a good thing. I hope that the councillors and mayor elected will look to the valid suggestions brought forward by all candidates over the past 9 months and consider them when formulating their vision for the next 4 years.
The public spoke to our municipal representatives and stated they wanted to be informed. I hope that the successful candidates have listened and will provide better access to information, perhaps through the video taping of council meetings available through internet or cable, or having agendas and minutes available at the libraries as was suggested during the campaign.
This strategy would show a willingness on the part of the new council to be transparent and remain in contact with their electorate, which they all promoted during their campaign.
It seems that Peter Mertens took it all, in my school he also won the kid election.
There are lots of kudos for Peter Mertans, well deserved I am sure but we would also like to send congratulations to Bev Campbell. Bev, you have worked very hard these past few years,to bad we are not there to reap the benfits of your labours. Ian and Margaret Ferguson
Susan and Crew: well done. You provided a real community service and demonstrated what this modern technology can do. Now, how are you going to cover the council meeting? 🙂
It was great to be able to follow the up-to-date results of the County polls. Thanks county live!
Peter Mertens won because he wasn’t afraid to take a stand on what matters to the County, i.e. industrial wind turbines, high taxation, and good management of our municipal affairs. His win proves that to speak clearly and to answer questions forthrightly will always win out over avoiding the issues, keeping one’s agenda hidden, and bafflegab. Well done County and good luck, Peter.
Sue: I thoroughly enjoyed the coverage, minute by minute. Well done! I would have liked to also see the results, candidate by candidte, for Ward One – Picton. Of course, I have them this morning. The Globe and Mail had long discussions this morning about Toronto, but no numerical results. The Sun did have all the results. Ford beat Smitherman by 100,000 votes.
Congratulations Peter. We knew that fiscal responsability would come through.

No matter whether we were born here or, in my case, moved here some years ago, the County is a special place and we must now all work together to ensure it remains an inclusive, vibrant, and affordable home for all – respectful of differing views and opinions.
