Sophiasburgh students enjoy Christmas feast of local slow food

Sophiasburgh Central School students were treated Tuesday to a locally produced Christmas meal hosted by the Healthy Lunch program volunteers and financially supported by Food for Learning along with Slow Food Prince Edward County.
“The lunch is an extension and celebration of what we have been experiencing this past term,” said Pooky Scott, principal. “We are delighted that a group of committed volunteers and parents came forward to help the students experience the value and taste of local, healthy food. Since September we have been fortunate to serve healthy lunches every Friday, for a small fee, due to the generosity of the ‘Healthy Lunch Program’ volunteers and Slow Food Prince Edward County.  This meal, in particular, highlights this lunch program and gives our students a wonderful opportunity to share in the joy of the season together.”
Cynthia Peters, of Slow Food Prince Edward County, was instrumental in the autumn launch of the one-year pilot project for healthy lunches at the school every Friday. She worked with school organizer Suzanne Lucas and the school board’s Food for Learning program. Proceeds will go toward renovations in the school kitchen. The hope is that the program can be extended to other County schools.
The holiday lunch menu included roasted turkey from GoodFellow Meats, carrots from Vicki’s Veggies, potatoes from Hagerman’s, peas from Mill Creek Farms, bread for stuffing from The Pastry House and apple cider from Campbell’s Orchards. Also served were cranberries, gravy and shortbread festive cookies.
