garlic_manTADEUSZ MACZKA – January 14, 1930 – December 30, 2013. It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of the Fish Lake Garlic Man on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital in his 84th year. Husband of the late Wilma Maczka (nee Kuhl). Beloved Tata of Tadeusz “Taj” and Barbara “Basia” Campbell (Terry). Cherished Opa of Alexandra and grandfather of Graham, Caitlin, Megan, and Ryo. Born in Tarnow, Poland, Ted suffered a crippling injury in a WW II labour camp. He immigrated to Canada in the early 1950s where he worked as a tool and die machinist. An entrepreneur at heart, he then developed a wholesale and retail business importing and selling European foods to small businesses across the GTA and Southwestern Ontario. After reading an article in the Financial Post discussing the millions of dollars that Canada spends on importing garlic, Ted decided that he wanted to make Canada self-sufficient in growing garlic. He purchased a hobby farm in Demorestville (Prince Edward County) where he began his research and garlic farming. He won multiple awards for his garlic and travelled far and wide to share his knowledge, expertise, and “garlic gospel.” It was his drive and determination that pioneered the ever-expanding garlic-growing movement in North America. He will be sorely missed. Many thanks to the staff, nurses, and doctors of the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital for their care and support and to the countless others who cared for Ted over the years. Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to attend a memorial visitation to celebrate Ted’s life at the Whattam Funeral Home, 33 Main Street, Picton, on Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 1:00-3:00pm. If desired, donations in his name can be made to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

BETSY CLARKE – August 24, 1940 – October 16, 2013 – Peacefully in Picton, Ontario, after a life well-lived, on October 16, 2013. Born August 24, 1940 at Antrim, Ontario on the family farm where she learned a love of the land and the rural community that she never lost. Elizabeth Ann, known all her life as Betsy, was the eldest daughter of Robert Serson Sparrow and his wife Bessie, both deceased. She was a graduate of Queen’s University, 1963. She was the dearly loved and loving mother of Bradley Mackenzie and his wife Adrienne (née Ball) and Daniel Richard, and grandmother of Lucas Thomson and Callum Harris Clarke. There was no role in her life that she loved more than being mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. She loved them with a passion. Betsy was the sister to Sally Cowan and her husband Bill (Milford, Ontario) and to Bob Sparrow and his wife Carolyn (Antrim, Ontario), and aunt and great aunt to their children and grandchildren. Betsy had a long career in public service: as a high school English teacher, Secretary Manager of Carp Agricultural Society, and Executive Director of the Canadian 4-H Council and 4-H Foundation. In 1991 she established her firm, Betsy Clarke & Associates, described as Consultants in Philanthropy. She loved being a fundraising consultant; her goal was always to put the organizations she worked with – most often community-based ones where she could make a difference – on the path to self-sufficiency. In her later years, she was very actively involved with churches and faith-based organizations, which she recognized as the catalyst for starting so many of the agencies that supported the vulnerable in our society. She was proud to be an Anglican and supported her parish of St. Matthew’s in many ways. Visitation at Tubman’s Funeral Home, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa, on Tuesday, October 22 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service to be held at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, 217 First Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario, on Wednesday, October 23 at 1pm. Reception to follow at St. Matthew’s. ROBERT ‘Bob’ ROBB – August 13, 1922 – March 25, 2013 – Bob was a complex person. Born August 13th 1922, died on March 25, 2013 at Hallowell House Nursing Home. He led a fruitful, happy life. Like everyone life had its frustrations for him but lately he has been saying how lucky he has been, A happy life. When Bob moved to the County with his wife Jean in 1970 he got into things right away. He set up East Lake Marine in Cherry Valley. He was legally blind but became a marine mechanic people looked up to. Over the years he was asked by Manpower to train people with different disabilities. He trained many and those people were able to get jobs. Aside from being clever Bob was also wise. He stuck up for what he believed and fought for the ‘little guy’. While Bob had a hard outer shell he was quite compassionate. He was determined to not let his blindness deter him from doing things. Bob belonged to many committees and clubs. He was an honorary member of Cherry Valley Lions. He started the blind bowlers club in Picton and a social group for blind people. Bob was responsible for the Job Fair which was held in Armoury mall. It exposed people to the many services that are available in the community. Bob was a very good swimmer and had a lot of respect for the YMCA. He was a good dancer and enjoyed the music of the big band era. Bob enjoyed pets and they in turn enjoyed him. The last few years of his busy life were spent at Hallowell House. Bob was a good friend. Online condolences www.whattamfuneralhome.com * * *

She is survived by her stepchildren Debra, Robert (Darlene), Barbara and wonderful grandchildren Regan and Chase, her nieces and nephews, brother-in-law Eric McIntyre  and wonderful caregiver and sister-in-law Gwen Thompson. I loved them all. Merle worked for Bell for 33 years; from Thunder Bay to Newfoundland and a few stops in between. She enjoyed her work and the many friends she made. Merle made many friends playing bridge – sorry for all the flubs. I hope you remember only the good bids. Thank you to all my friends for all their treats, gifts, cards and visits. Merle enjoyed her Church and would like to say thank you to Rev. Andrew Wilson and Rev. Joyce Blackburn, Tod Lavender, Dr. Higgins and staff, KRCC and staff and nurses Joscelyn and Marissa.
