DELTON DIXON ‘Del’ FISHER – January 24, 1939 – March 24, 2016 – Peacefully at home in the early morning of March 25th, 2017 with family at his side. Del Fisher, born January 24th, 1939 in Port Perry, of Fish Lake Road at the age of 78. Predeceased by his parents Milton and Minnie Fisher and Brother Barry. Bonnie Taylor, wife of eight months and best friend for 31 years. Father of Scott (Cheryl) and grandfather to Justin (Cortney) of Toronto. Del will be missed by his brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and a multitude of friends. Always loved a good time, good laugh, an outing on his prized tugboat “Rosebud” or a cuddle with one of his beloved pets. A special thank-you to the medical staff of the County and Belleville Hospitals, who through their kindness, caring and willingness to laugh at all Del’s stories made his final months such a happy time for him. JAMES BRUCE LOUNSBERRY – October 11, 1946 – March 17, 2017 – Suddenly after a short battle with cancer at Belleville General Hospital on Friday March 17th, 2017. Jim Lounsberry of Tweed, formerly of the County, at the age of 70. Retired from Essroc after 44 years of service. Beloved husband of Rhea for forty-two years, father of Anna Lounsberry Gulliver (Jason) of Tweed and Rob (Sara Scheid) of Belleville and proud Grandpa of Pierce, Scarlet, Myles, Morgan, Natalie and Karlee. MARGARET EILEEN ‘Lee’ HARDON – Peacefully, with her family by her side, at the Hallowell House Nursing Home, Lee Hardon (nee Colley) passed away on Wednesday March 15, 2017, at the age of 93. Predeceased by her beloved husband William Henry ‘Harry’ Hardon in 1997, and her parents Ernest and Rose (nee Willis) Colley, Lee is survived by her son John, his wife Shari and grandaughter Rachel, all of Bloomfield. THOMAS WILLIAM ROY COOK – March 11, 1930 – March 14, 2017 – It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Thomas William Roy “Bill” Cook on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the age of 87 years. He served his country from 20th November, 1953 to 7th April, 1981 in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps and in the Canadian Armed Forces, rising to the rank of Master Warrant Officer. Bill Cook loved fishing and Country Music especially Hank Snow. He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary Francis Prout and sons Ronald and Gerald Cook. He is survived by his children William (Kathryn) Cook, Thomas Cook, Brenda Kennedy-Cook, Bonny (Michael) Ratnayake and partner Robin Samuel. Devoted grandfather of 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. NANCY RAYE RANKIN (nee Jeffery) – November 23, 1940 – March 9, 2017 – At approximately 10:30 pm on March 9, 2017 at Northeast Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, TX, Nancy Rankin left this world exactly the way she always wanted; suddenly, quickly and without pain. She was with her husband Lloyd, relative Penny May and friend Kris McLain. She had spent the day laughing and shopping. Born to Raymond and Clara Jeffery (nee McConnell) on November 23, 1940, she is pre-deceased by her son Lloyd Jr., her sister Carolyn and brother Tommy. ROBERT JOHN JOSEPH THOMPSON – August 7, 1953 – February 28, 2017 – After a short illness, passed away peacefully at Belleville General Hospital on February 28th, 2017. Bob Thompson, of Ben Gill Road, at the age of 63. Beloved husband and soul mate of Cheryl for over forty years. Loved father of Jessica of Amherstview and Josh and Eli of Demorestville. Dear brother of Christine (Rolly) Arsenault of L’Ancienne-Lorette, QC and Andrew (Karen) of Saint-Etienne, QC and son-in-law of Don and June Kennedy of Carrying Place. WILLIAM WIGHTMAN – In his 88th year, William Hannum Wightman, of Wellington, Ontario at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital on February 28, 2017. Cherished and caring father of Donald (Yew-Wai) of Miami Beach, grandfather of Kirstyn (Daniel) Mayers of Toronto, great grandfather of Freia and Mobius, and husband of Verna. Bill obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, where he formed lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers in Delta Upsilon, Lambda Iota Chapter. After serving with the RCAF and Canadian Army for two years, he obtained a Master’s in Labour Relations from Columbia University. He held senior positions in the health care, food processing and petrochemical industries in Canada and the U.S.A., and eventually became the long serving Director of Industrial Relations for what was then the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association. He was concurrently appointed a member of the Ontario Labour Relations Board and served on numerous arbitration panels. He authored three books on labour relations, and represented the CMA as a delegate and technical advisor in Geneva, Paris and Vienna. He was a faculty member of both the University of Toronto and Loyalist College, and a member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute and the Wellington Legion Branch 160. Bill followed his lifelong passion for public service with his election in the riding of Scarborough West as a Member of the 31st Parliament of Canada, where he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour. Following his retirement, Bill and Verna moved to Prince Edward County in 1994, where he became actively involved in the community. He was one of the earliest to fight the imposition of industrial wind turbines in the County and was honoured for his commitment to that cause by a tribute dinner in 2013. He was an honorary member of the Alliance to Protect Prince Edward County and an active member of the Advisory Committee of the County Coalition for Safe and Appropriate Green Energy. He had also served as a member of the Friends of the Wellington Museum and as chair of the board of Wellington Legion Manor (where he lived for the last year of his life). Bill earned the respect of all sides of the political and management/labour divides with his courtesy, impartiality, insight, principles and willingness to listen. Bill’s gentlemanly self-deprecation and good humour will also be sorely and widely missed. Bill was a member of the Kingston and East York barbershop quartets, played a smooth jazz piano and admired the work of George Shearing, the World’s Greatest Jazz Band, the Page Kavanaugh Trio, Mel Torme and Frank Sinatra. A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Wellington United Church, 243 Main St., Wellington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Prince Edward County Legal Appeal Fund, the Building Fund of the Quinte Humane Society or the Storehouse Food Bank. SUSAN INA ANN CHRISTIE (NEE HEPBURN) – With typical grace and near-magical effortlessness, Susan Ina Ann Christie died in her home on February 24, 2017 surrounded by family and friends. She was 83. Susan is predeceased by husband Jack and survived by her life’s project to make decent people of some undoubtedly questionable material: Gavin (Erin), Robert (Margaret), Vicky, Peter (Priscilla) and Elizabeth (John). She will be deeply missed by grandchildren—Connor, Matthew, Maura, Fraser, Hannah, Laura and Katherine—and many friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was much loved by “adopted daughter” Juliet as well as Niza, Shine, Valencia and many other wonderful caregivers. CARL THOMAS WILLIAMS – December 19, 1958 – February 18, 2017 – Sadly, early in the morning of February 18 and surrounded by family Carl left us, ending the pain and sadness he had been experiencing. Carl was a traveller, an entrepreneur and a sailor of tall ships. During his life he sailed the seven seas and lived for an extended time in Denmark as well as all over Canada , before settling in The County. He was an old school, classy but hardworking guy, and you could be sure that he always had a witty remark up his sleeve as well as a warm smile on his face. Mourning his loss are his devastated family, wife Cheryl, son David (Mia) and grandson Otto, Mother Sheila, sister Tracy (Mac) and sister Vicki as well as extended family and friends in Denmark. RICHARD GRANT HOWES – Suddenly at his home, Grant Howes, born June 8, 1956 passed away in Waupoos on Saturday January 21, 2017, at the age of 60. Grant leaves behind his wife and partner in the County Cider Company Jenifer Dean, son Alastair and his mother Thrina of Nanaimo, BC and step-children Cassie and Neil Dobosh. He is also survived by his father William G. Howes (Bill), sister Liz Howes and her husband Stewart Colvin, niece Jessie and nephews Jason, Daniel and Dylan. Grant was predeceased by his mother Berva several months ago and brother Bill (Debbie Howes) several years ago. Grant received a double major in both Zoology and Economics from the University of Alberta in 1978 followed by attaining his MBA from Queen’s University in 1980. Grant worked in finance in Toronto before moving out to BC where he was involved in a number of businesses before returning to the family farm in Prince Edward County to pursue his dream of opening a cidery and making the ultimate cider. He had a passion for growing apples which he shared with all around him. He was a mentor and friend to others in the cider industry and became recognized as the ‘grandfather’ of cider in Ontario. The family will have a private church service in the next few weeks to be followed in the spring with a celebration of life at the County Cider Company where all will be welcomed to come and raise a glass of cider in his memory. LOUIS F STEVENS – September 23, 1937 – January 11, 2017 – At Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital, on Wednesday January 11th, 2017. He was the youngest son of Louis Frederick and Mary (Em/Oliver) of Canal/Bonny River, where he was born on September 23, 1937. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Dona Stevens, (nee Cronkwright), and older brother, Leo. Louis F. Stevens Jr grew up in St. George and Saint John. He is survived by his children: John Stevens (Michelle), Cold Lake Alberta; Paula Stevens, Picton; Timothy Stevens,(Vanessa), Edmonton Alberta; Teresa Stevens, (Steve), Picton and James Stevens (Carolyn), Picton; and their children. Also by his loving partner and companion, Dale Cronkwright, Picton; sisters, Elizabeth, Canal/Bonny River; Mary, Windsor, Ontario, and Isabel (Lloyd) Martin, Fredericton; nieces and nephews, and several cousins in Charlotte County and Saint John. Cremation has taken place; his ashes will be brought home to the family plot, St. George Rural Cemetery, St. George New Brunswick at a later time for interment.
