Sandy heroically fought brain cancer for over seven years, exceeding his doctor’s expectations right up until the end. Even in his very last days, Sandy was the funniest person in the room. It was hard to cry and feel sorry for yourself when Sandy had so much humour, joy and fight in him. Sandy was born in Westlock Alberta, the 4th of 5 boys brought into the world by mother Mary Delicate. Lane and Gene Baker, Dave Kondratiuk and Ralph Yelland have a lifetime of stories to share about their beautiful brother. Sister Sue, reunited with her brother recently, adored her brother and will spend a lifetime celebrating him. Eight nieces and nephews will miss the coolest Uncle ever. While Sandy lived in many places, he spent a good deal of his life in Picton, Ontario where he had too many friends to list. In the early 90s, sly-Sandusky tipped a Frisbee towards a ‘city-girl’ on the beach at Sandbanks provincial park. Sandy and Sarah got married in 1997; while that marriage did not stand the test of time, it produced Sandy’s greatest accomplishments and his most singular source of pride: his daughters Hunter (15 years old) and Kennedy (12 years old). Sandy LIVED for his girls. Many people make this claim (such that it borders on ‘cliché’), but Sandy in fact TRULY lived for his girls. Leaving them behind will be the hardest thing he has ever done. While Hunter and Kennedy will forever mourn the loss of their dad, they know how lucky they are to have had the world’s most incredible and dedicated father for the very short time that they had him. Sandy and Sarah lived in British Columbia for many years – here again Sandy had oodles of dear friends, and the west coast of Canada will mourn his loss. Because Sandy was also the world’s finest ex-husband and co-parent, he remained close with Sarah and Sarah’s family. In-laws (out-laws?) Nanny and Papa, Maralyn Tassone, Michelle Arscott and Danielle Hunter, four nieces and nephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins were made better people for having known Sandy. Sandy naturally excelled at every sport he touched, and he was better at golf than most of you reading this. He loved his dog Gabby, the Leafs and the Jays, spending time with his girls, Homer Simpson, Clash of Clans and Boston Cream Donuts. He loved late night radio, casinos and conspiracy theories, he believed 100% in aliens (which is why he has gone to the mothership on the other side of the moon), and he would do ANYTHING for friends and family. He was generous to a fault. Everyone who knew him, loved him. The last year of Sandy’s cancer brought him the most difficulty. It is only through the incredible and super-human efforts (and sacrifices) of his brothers Gene and Ralph, his mother Mary Delicate, his Sisters Sue and Lisa and his best friend Ina that Sandy was able to stay at home, almost to the very end, and continue his role as father. To them, we are eternally grateful. Sandy, we will take good care of your girls. We love you, and we will feel you in the wind. Safe travels. A visitation Saturday, Dec. 2 from 1-2 p.m. will be followed by a service led by Rev. Michelle Brotherton, at the Morris Funeral Chapel, 4 Division St., Bowmanville. In memory of Sandy Delicate, the family has decided that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an education trust fund for his daughters, Hunter and Kennedy. To facilitate this, one can e-transfer SandyDelicateTrustFund@gmail.com (please send the e-transfer password in a separate email to the same email address). Online memories and condolences can be posted at the Morris Funeral Chapel Ltd. * * * SAMUEL ROY CHARLES SPENCER – Suddenly at his home in Waupoos, “Slammin’ Sammy Spencer” passed away on Monday November 27, 2017, at the age of 46. He is survived by Virginia, the love of his life and best friend for 56 years, sons Eric and Dean, and grandchildren Jennifer and Kevin, and brother Tom. Born in Ottawa in 1937, he graduated from the High School of Montreal in 1956. In 1961 he graduated from the Royal Military College, Kingston, in 1962 from the University of Toronto (BASc), in 1967 from the US Navy Test Pilot School (flight test engineer) and again in 1971 from the Royal Military College (MEng). He had a good Cold War. As a junior RCAF engineer officer on his first posting he saw to the arming of #3 Operational Training Unit CF-100 training airplanes at Bagotville, Quebec so they would be set to launch against the commie rascals during the Cuban crisis of 1962. Early in his long and varied career he was a technical intelligence analyst, then an airplane and engine production project manager, and later he engineered flight tests at Edwards Air Force Base, California and at Cold Lake, Alberta. He was Base Technical Services Officer at Bagotville, Quebec, followed by a tour as Chief Instructor at the technical school at Borden, Ontario, and was base commander at Canadian Forces Base St Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. He served as military attaché in Prague, Czechoslovakia from 1984 to 1987 with all of the high adventure that that entailed. He led Canada’s first arms control inspection of a Czechoslovak Peoples’ Army divisional exercise in June 1989 under the aegis of the Stockholm treaty. Then the Berlin Wall came down followed by the Velvet Revolution in Prague. Watching the television news drama of the Czechoslovak people peacefully freeing themselves from a repressive regime was an emotional time. With the cold war over, in 1991 Ken began a delightful retirement to Prince Edward County helping Virginia operate her B&B for a few years and chairing the Picton Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee and later the Community Economic Development Corporation board. Thanks to Dr. Matthews and the terrific gang of nurses at the Kingston General Hospital and the Napanee Cancer Centre who took such good care of him until the leukemia caught up with him. As he put it, he did not so much battle the disease as engage in a prolonged period of peaceful co-existence with it. Special thanks to everyone who provided end-of-life care, especially Dr Blanchard and Dr Beach, and nurse Ann Robinson. Known by all for his integrity, decisiveness, creative problem-solving and keen wit, Ken was also a charming and brilliant raconteur. We shall all miss the many humorous retellings of stories from his seemingly bottomless reservoir of riveting anecdotes. Night after night his tales, always entertaining and instructive, kept everyone at the table long after the meal was over, but of course, glasses were never empty. He had a splendid run and had more fun and high adventure than he could have hoped for. Ken requested that there be no religious services or ceremonies. The party’s over now. A private interment of ashes will take place at the National Military Cemetery, Beechwood Ottawa. Memorial Donations to Hospice Prince Edward would be much appreciated. Anyone who knew Bob knew that he was truly larger than life. Bob led a full and accomplished life surrounded by family and friends who loved him for his charisma, his devilishly sharp wit, and his huge heart. It was his huge heart that quickly and painlessly gave out on him on a beautiful September day, shortly after returning from his morning walk with Kilty, his beloved west highland terrier, at his lakeside cottage in Prince Edward County. Bob had a lust for life and enthusiasm that was evident in everything he did, whether it be singing karaoke to one of his favourite Louis Armstrong tracks, playing a round of golf with friends, or helping out someone in need. He was selfless, generous, and his work for the communities in which he served was legendary. Bob never wavered in commitment to the innumerable organizations he supported across home and abroad. Locally he was very active including being a longstanding member and Board member of the Picton Golf Club and he was also instrumental in the start up of 99.3 County-FM. It is impossible to guess how many lives Bob has touched in his 76 years, but it is safe to say that he will be sorely missed by all of them. Bob was one of 13 children born to Paul and Agatha Mauro who immigrated from Italy in the early 1900s. Paul had a plumbing business and Bob learned the trade when he was young before venturing out and building a long and successful career in marketing – at Fabergé where he met his beloved Liz, in the Canadian music industry where he held major media and marketing positions, and in the auto industry where he was a long-time marketing director for Maaco Systems. Bob loved start-up and turn-around business challenges and had done numerous of each, with some very praiseworthy results, from a marketing and sales prospective, both hands on and as a consultant. Bob’s siblings were Frank, Joe, and John Mauro, Connie Rosetti, Rose, Irene, Rita Benedet, Beatrice St. Jean, Doris McKnight, Margaret Phillips, Angela Alberts, and Anita Curtola. Bob leaves behind his cherished family; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Jamie & Connie Forrester, and grandsons Calvin (Jennifer Garner), and Brett (Evan Farkash), as well as many nephews and nieces. The love of Bob’s life was his wife Liz (nee Lowes) and after three years apart, they are now rightfully together again. In lieu of flowers and in the spirit of Bob, people are invited to pay it forward and give to causes or individuals that need help, as he would have. Bob’s wishes were that there be no funeral. Please join in a “celebration of life” for Bob Mauro, Sunday Sept 24th, 4pm at the Picton Golf Club. He will be sadly missed by his children Martin and his wife Lesley of Winnipeg MB, Colm and his wife Cindy of Prince Edward County, Fiona and her wife Jennifer of Toronto, and the late Anne MacCool. “Grandpa Joe” will also be missed by Brendan, Erin, Jack, Isabelle, and Sam. We take great comfort in knowing that Joe will be reunited in spirit with Lil, his beloved wife of 51 years. Theirs was a love like no other, and their devotion to one another inspired everyone who knew them. Joe was also beloved “baby brother” to the late Mick MacCool and Noreen MacCool, Sister Colm O.P. As a young man, Joe MacCool left Northern Ireland in search of a better life for himself. His journeys, which he loved to tell his family about over and over again in great comic detail, took him to Dagenham, England, a Paulist seminary in Lake George, N.Y. and eventually Toronto Ontario where, on February 23, 1961 at 4:55pm at the Catholic Children’s Aid Society, he met Lil Murphy and they embarked on a life together defined by faith, love of family, and service to those in need. Joe had many weird (and not so wonderful jobs) before eventually becoming a teacher where he touched the lives of so many as a guidance counsellor at St. Peter’s High School and as a Special Education teacher in several elementary schools across Peterborough and surrounding areas. Before but especially after they retired, Joe and Lil dedicated years of their lives providing support to vulnerable people through their work at Telecare and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. For years, as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve you would find them volunteering on the phones to listen to lonely and isolated people who had no one else to talk to. The work Joe and Lil did to help others was not the kind that gets recognized with awards and public tributes and they would not have had it any other way. An amateur theologian, master joke teller, golf addict and track and field enthusiast, he also enjoyed nothing more than sitting next to his wife reading her murder mysteries with his children and grandchildren close by. His smile, wit and huge heart will never be forgotten by all who knew him. Mr. MacCool is resting at the Whattam Funeral Home 33 Main Street, Picton, Ontario, where visitation will be held on Friday April 7th, 2017 at 11 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial to be held at St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church, Picton Ontario at 1 p.m. If desired, memorial donations to the St. Gregory’s Catholic Church would be appreciated. www.whattamfuneralhome.com. * * * BEVERLEY JEAN ARNOLD – Passed away with her family at her side on Thursday, March 30th, 2017 at the Ottawa Heart Institute, Ottawa, in her 78th year.
